PPC Experience on WASH Response

PPC is a local organisation resisted at DAO, Dhanusha. The NGO has so far worked in Dhanusha, Mahottary, Rautahat and Bara districts of   Madhesh Pradesh for the past many years. It has permission to work throughout the Madhesh province. The NGO is familiar with the topography, culture, language, climate and security situation of Madhesh Pradesh. Hence, the NGO can work in hardship and even in difficult and crisis situations. The NGO has good number of well trained and experienced human resources in WASH who would be mobilized and would contribute in improving the quality WASH services.

PPC has deep knowledge and long and relevant experience on projects related to WASH, Education and Emergency Response. It had implemented WASH projects with the support of UNICEF and in coordination with Governments since April 2015 to February 2023. Recently it has been selected as   partner for Emergency Education and life saving WASH by the UNICEF for Madhesh Province. Glimpse of the major projects are mentioned below:

Major projects

Wash, Sanitation & Environment

This programme was implemented with the financial support of UNICEF in 30 schools of 12 VDCs of Dhanusha district of Madhesh province. The implementation of the program started in April 2015 and was completed by March 2016. Fund received from UNICEF was NRs 1,504,400. The PPC contributed in kind/ equipment support worth NRs 585,400. Results achieved because of the project implementation were:

  • Thirty child clubs were functional with efforts for sanitation and hygiene promotion in the schools and community. The activity of the clubs benefitted at least 8200 children and teachers.
  • Thirty schools were developed as WASH Model zone with child friendly water supply and washing facilities and gender friendly toilets.
  • Hand washing with soap and water after defecation and before eating practiced by 100% children and teachers.
  • All teachers, School Management Committees/ PTA / Child club members used toilets at their house. This helped in ODF campaign run by governments.
  • Trained 1200 child club members and oriented around 7000 children and guardians on WASH in school.

 

WATER AND SANITATION FACILITY FOR TIN TALLE COMMUNITY

This programme was implemented with the financial support of UNICEF in Tin Talle Community of The Ganeshman-Charnath Municipality of Dhanusha district of Madhesh province. The aim of providing support to the project was to accelerate sanitation social movement. The people of this community and surrounding areas were dependent on locally available spout and streams as source of drinking water. They use to  invest a lot of time in fetching water, it put additional burden to women. The ODF movement was not moving well due to scarcity of water. The implementation of the program started in December 2017 and was completed by July 2018. Fund received from UNICEF was NRs 4,930,405. The Community in kind contributed NRs 1,919,556 and material support from WSSDO was worth NRs 218,982. Major achievements of the project were:

  • A total 1155 people of 153 households benefitted from water supply facility
  • 700 children and women gained skills and knowledge on hygiene behavior (hand washing before eating and after defecation, use of toilet)
  • The Municipal and ward level water, sanitation and hygiene coordination committees were reformed ensuring women’s participation, capacitated to be functional and led the program.
  • Reservoir/ collection and storage/ community supply tanks were constructed; piped water was supplied to 153 households.

This programme was implemented with the financial support of UNICEF in 30 schools of 12 VDCs of Dhanusha district of Madhesh province. The activities were monitored by WSSDO, UNICEF and District Education Office. The implementation of the program started in August 2016 and was completed November 2016.. Fund received from UNICEF was NRs 1,274,720.   Major achievements of the project were:

  • 50 teachers of 12 schools trained on WASH (3 days’ training)
  • Baseline survey conducted in 12 schools to know the status of WASH facilities.
  • 12 JRC/ RCY and child clubs formed. 30 child club members trained on child club management and WASH in school (2 days’ training). 12 resource centre and child clubs office established in schools.
  • Campaign conducted in school and community of the 12 schools during N/ SAW and other water and sanitation days on the themes as: Hand wash, toilet promotion, Public places cleaning, Kitchen/ home cleaning,
  • WASH facility maintenance and installation in 10 schools. These include: Toilet and drinking water supply, hand washing station, Maintenance/ installation of incinerators for menstrual hygiene management, sanitary pad distribution.
  • Provision of operation and maintenance fund in each school

WASH IN INSTITUTIONS

This programme was implemented with the financial support of UNICEF in Janakpur sub Metropolis, Chireshwarnath, Mithila, Ganeshman Charnath, Municipalities and Dhanauji and Aurahi rural Municipalities of Dhanusha district plus Bardibas, Jaleshwar, Loharpatty, Manrasiswa and Ekdara municipalities/ rural municipalities of Mahottari District of Madhesh province. The objectives of the project was to improve access, quality and sustainability of the WASH services, to increase the quality of education in the schools and to improve the quality of care in health care facilities, in order to ulfil the children’s rights. The implementation of the program started in February 2020 and was completed in April 2021. Program implementation was affected due to COVID 19 pandemic. Fund received from UNICEF was NRs 1,274,720.   Major achievements were: 

  • Completed Initial assessment of 24 Schools and 7 HCFs
  • Completed final design and estimate for new construction, repair and maintenance works of 24 School and 7 HCFs.
  • Provided easy fix hand washing stations in 10 schools of Ekdara Rural Municipality.
  • Completed repair and maintenance / construction works of WASH facilities in 23 schools and 7 HCFs.
  • Completed 15 celebrations of International/National/Local days (12 Global Hand Wash Day and 3 World Water Day).
  • School level cleaning campaign and hand washing campaign celebrated in 24 schools.
  • Completed 1 day Wins program in 24 schools.
  • MHM program has been completed in 24 schools and 7 HCFs.
  • Provided cleaning materials in 31schemes.
  • Provide printing flex in 24 school (School WASH self-evaluation form, Three Star Indicators, Hand washing steps, COVID awareness, name list of the child club members)
  • Provide printing flex in 7HCFs (Hand washing steps, COVID awareness)
  • Logistics and special support to CC/WASH CC has been provided to 24 Schools.
  • Minimum support (Open wooden rack and display board) to 7HCF for display of WASH status of health care facilities.
  • Completed formation of CC & SWASH CC in 24 schools.
  • Completed 1 day orientation to child club and SWASHCC on WASH in school program in 24 schools.
  • Successfully completed 3 days residential training on WASH in school to focal Teachers
  • Successfully completed 2 days WASH FIT Training to Health Care Personnel( Health In charge, Focal Person
  • Successfully completed 2 days care operation, repair and maintenance training to the caretakers of 31 institutions,
  • Successfully completed 3 day Tot On WASH in Institutions to CSO’s Staffs where provided technical support to programme staffs for effective implementation of program
  • Carried out initial, mid palika level orientation and planning workshops.

This programme was implemented in joint venture with Chhay-ya Nepal with the financial support of UNICEF. The PPC implemented the project in Chandrapur and Yamunamai Municipalities of Rautahat district while Chhay-ya implemented in Bara district of Madhesh Province.  The implementation of the program started in April 2022 and was completed in February 2023. Total Fund received from UNICEF was NRs 19,800,600 while partners contributed 4,775,200 making the total budget 24,575,800. Major achievements were: 

  • 4235 girls and 3465 boys had access to hand washing stations, safe drinking water and sanitation facilities compared to baseline = 0
  • More than 70% of children and more than 80% of teachers observed practicing hand wash before eating and after defecation at target schools (baseline = 20%)
  • 11 schools had menstruation hygiene management facilities (MHM) out of 22 schools (baseline was 2/ 22). 2190 adolescent girls had access to MHM facilities (baseline 420).
  • 8, 11, 3 schools met 3 star, 2 star 1nd 1 star standards respectively (baseline = 0)
  • 22 Child Club members, 22 WASH CC members, 22 care takers and 22 teachers capacitated on WinS including 3 star approach and O and M mechanism as per the guidelines (baseline = 0).
  • 22 schools had O and M mechanism (baseline = 0)
